Military training and military spouses

 

If you are in the military or are a veteran and received barber training in the military you may be eligible to receive credit for your training.  You also may be eligible for a temporary work permit, and you should contact the board staff for information on that temporary permit.  Finally, you may also be able to have certain fees waived.

 

• If you received at least 1,500 hours of training and have practiced at least two out of the past five years, you will need to provide military service records, such as the DD-214, showing the military specialty certification and experience in barbering. You will also submit the out-of-state application. (Please contact the board staff for information on what portions of the application you can skip.)
• If you didn't receive 1,500 hours of training but received additional training outside of the military, you may still be eligible for endorsement. If the combination of the training you received in and out of the military equals at least 1,500 hours, you need to provide a certification letter from the other state in which you were licensed. The same is true if you practiced at least two of the past five years, but not all of that time was in the military. You will also need to submit the out-of-state application.  (Please contact the board staff for information on what portions of the application you can skip.)
• If you don't meet either of the requirements above but still have the military service records, you may be able to be licensed by taking the exams. You will need to pay the appropriate exam fees and submit the apprentice exam application. (Please contact the board staff for information on what portions of the application you can skip.)

 

If you are the spouse of an active member of the military and are currently licensed in another state, you can get licensed by the board if you received at least 1,500 hours of barber-school training, provide a certification letter from the state where you're licensed, and submit proof that your spouse is a member of the military. FBI criminal background report

 

We no longer require FBI reports; instead, the board staff will conduct the background investigation.  Please contact the staff if you have any questions.
